As the years went by, we all got comfortable in those roles. When we went to visit my parents, we mostly hung out with Mami. Papi’s presence was part of the background while we interacted with my mom. During our visits, Mami was the one who greeted us at the door and gave us something to eat. She kept the conversation going. She was the one who kept track of birthdays, special events, and important dates. She was the one who called every day to ask how we were doing. She was the one who bought presents and cards for every occasion. Now she’s gone.
Since her death, Papi has become a forefront man. I will never forget the first ‘card’ holiday after Mami’s passing. It was Mother’s Day. Papi bought me an expensive Hallmark card and along with a generous gift card to one of my favorite stores. I remember laughing thinking that had been a first for him. The thought of Papi standing in the card aisle reading through them trying to find the perfect one for me was absolutely endearing.
And that wasn’t all. In the weeks that followed, Papi stepped up to the plate in a big way taking an active, lead role in his relationships with his daughters and grandchildren to help us with the enormous void left by my mom. Birthdays, recitals, celebrations, sicknesses, errands, holidays, and trips; you name it, Papi has done it all for us this year. His presence is now a comforting balm. He has proven he and Mami were truly a team. He was once a hero for our country, losing a leg in Vietnam, but now he is a hero where it matters most: at home. Our family is blessed by the man that he is, honoring God above all else and strong enough to embrace gentleness.
I want to honor Papi in a big way this father’s day. Papi loves to travel and has already been on a dozen trips in the past year. Out of town, out of state, out of the country, even out on a cruise. He just enjoys exploring God’s world.
I created a gift basket for him that is perfect for his travel loving heart.
